This group oversees all aspects of the water system, including raw water supply, treatment, distribution and water quality compliance. This is also the group implementing the automated meter reading program, providing for regular testing and repair of large meters, and expanding water service repairs, all of which will positively affect service delivery and water and wastewater revenues.

Atlanta’s drinking water has won national awards for its quality, clarity and taste. The Department of Watershed Management must provide well over 750 samples per month to the State of Georgia for analysis of lead and copper, bacteria, turbidity, and 21 other contaminants to assure water quality. This is your resource for the building permit process. Bureau of Buildings enforces the Codes adopted by the City of Atlanta to ensure minimum standards for the construction, repair, demolition, occupancy and maintenance of buildings, structures and properties.
We review, approve and issue all permits required by the City’s Codes for the repair, alteration or addition to all public and private buildings and structures; as well as, permits for new construction. We assist property owners in their effort to ensure that buildings are in compliance with the standards set forth in the City’s Codes.
This is also the City department to contact concerning tree issues for review by the City Arborist.

The Office of Solid Waste Services is responsible for the collection and disposal of solid waste within the City of Atlanta. Additionally, the office provides vacant lot clean-up; maintenance of various rights-of-way specified in the Atlanta City Code and dead animal removal and disposal. The office also oversees landfill operations; the City’s recycling program; enforcing codes related to lawn maintenance and the disposal of yard trimmings; and assists in citywide emergency operations.
